As a young adult trying to make my way into the professional world after college, I can confidently say what most people my age are thinking…“It’s kind of scary!” But, over the past few months while I’ve been interning at Bolder Options as the Communications and Outreach Intern, I’ve learned to look at it as an exciting journey to self-discovery through personal challenges and understanding about how to network within, and outside of the organization.
As a small town Iowan, I decided to stick around and attend Iowa State University, where I studied Child, Adult, and Family Services. While attending, I held some jobs working directly with school-aged children; whether it be at an afterschool program, summer camps, or babysitting. I learned then, that I love to be in direct care with youth because of the rewarding experience in knowing that I had become a positive role model to them; just like the mentors have, and continue to do, for the youth at Bolder Options. So, when I was searching for internships last spring, I was dead-set on finding one in which I could work directly with youth. However, that didn’t end up being the case, and for good reasons.
Because I didn’t have much of a background related to office work or communications and outreach, I didn’t really know what to think when I got to Bolder. However, I did know that I was incredibly inspired by their mission of “Teaching youth to succeed in ALL of life’s races,” and their commitment to maintaining healthy lifestyles. Just like the youth who first start at Bolder, I was embarking on a whole new journey that was going to change my life for the better, and I was ready to take on the challenge! At Bolder Options, they truly stick to their culture of helping people succeed, and they continued to do just that with me. I got to see the inner workings of a nonprofit by attending meetings, assisting with office duties, entering data, creating flyers, and promoting events on social media. Additionally, I had a number of opportunities to go out into the community for outreach events, which were very exciting and beneficial! I’ve been able network with incredible people and learn about many fantastic organizations that Bolder Options is connected with.
As my time here draws to a close, I wonder “What’s next? What should I do?” I relate to the youth who finish their one year mentee program at Bolder because now I have a new perspective and have made great strides in my personal growth and skills, just like they all have. Not only has Bolder Options been a huge stepping stone and learning curve in the many lives of youth in the Twin Cities, it has been a challenging new platform for me as well.
So, what’ next in Kadyn’s book of life? Right now, only one thing is for certain….becoming a mentor! Take the challenge!
